The Catholic Grandparents’ Association’s goal is to assist grandparents in passing on the Faith and to keep prayer at the heart of family life. An integral part of the Catholic Grandparents Association is setting up branches at a parish level. These act as prayer and support groups for grandparents. Grandparents have a unique vocation that must be fostered and cherished in the spirit of St. Joachim and St. Anne, the grandparents of Jesus and parents of Mary. World Day for Grandparents & the Elderly
Pope Francis established a World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly which took place for the first time on Sunday 25 July 2021. More information about the upcoming celebration may be found here!
Ideas for How to Celebrate the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly
- Host a Mass of Thanksgiving on the weekend of July 26/27 focusing on the celebration of grandparents. If possible invite grandparents to be part of the Mass. Include those in care homes.
- Grandparents’ Book of Remembrance: Invite parishioners to share the names of grandparents and elderly members of their family who are no longer with us in a parish book of remembrance. The book can be brought to the altar at the start of Mass on the weekend of July 19/20.
- Host a novena or holy hour for grandparents and the elderly on the eve of Sunday, July 27.
- Forget-me-not flowers are the official flowers for grandparents. These might be included in the liturgy or seeds might be passed on to grandchildren to grow in memory of their grandparents.
